A Case Of Nchanga Open Pit Mine, Zambia Silwamba C, Chileshe P R K Abstract: Mining in Chingola, Zambia, started underground in 1931, and was catastrophically flooded and closed. The present Nchanga Underground Mine (NUG) started in 1937. The Nchanga Open Pit (NOP) mine started in 1955, situated to the west of NUG, and partially overlying it.
The mine has marked out a 90-m wide hazard exclusion zone in which the potential collapse is expected to occur. It is "at least" 60 m away from nearby communities, he said. Apart from the Nchanga open pit, KCM also operates the Nchanga and Konkola underground mines, concentrators, a smelter, a tailings leach plant, and a refinery. Press Release
Nchanga Division of ZCCM has installed and operated a trolley assist system on part of their truck fleet for some three years. This paper examines how the system came to be chosen and how the many features of construction and operation were dealt with. The economics and productivity of the system are presented as are the personnel aspects of acceptance and training.
