The direct screw adjustment of a standard boring head such as a Criterion or the incredible Moore head with .0001 verneir is just better in my opinion for normal boring. Both the Tree and Wohlhaupter heads slide adjustment works through a series of gears and shafts that also prodide the travel under operation.

I've only used an Enco head that took 1/2" boring bars on my manual R8 mill (with so-so results), and I don't have any experience with Narex, Criterion, Wohlhaupter, Tree or any of the other boring heads I've seen mentioned. It seems like having something that took 5/8 or 3/4 inch bars would help stiffen things up and give better results.

I tend to avoid using mine because I have to find the print-out manual and spend about an hour with it each time to remember how to use it. Then again, that is a self exasperating problem. I tend to just use a BP boring head, or one of the imports for run of the mill boring. The tree can be angled such that it sets in tenths.
